From Pain, to Art

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Makes me cry when my MacBook Pro stops dead in it’s tracks and speaks Spanish to me. Know what i’m talking about? Hopefully not. It’s the Mac equivalent of the Blue Screen of Death.

Well it happened to me on my new MacBook Chode, and it made me sad. So i made music with the resultant noise loop to express my pain.

Inbox Zero. ‘Nothing’ was ever so good.

Merlin Mann’s Inbox ZeroI’m looking into my crystal ball… And i see that you’re currently using a computer, and you have an email account… Yes, i can see that clearly now. It might be a work account, it might be personal. Or both. Ah crap. Power just went out. I’ll have to use brain power from now on. Release the hamster!

I have a personal email account and i get a lot of correspondence re a community group i’m heavily involved in (not Hell’s Angels if you were wondering) and it’s not unusual to get many emails from this group of people a day, regarding many different topics. This can make life rather interesting.

Put it on my To-Do list

TaskpaperI really don’t like doing things. Things that i have to do. It’s that whole ‘rebelling against what you’re told’ to do (even though at some stage i’ve chosen to do these things). And so i make lists. Lists of dread. I’ve tried a few programs that allow you to ‘tick off’ things once you’ve completed them, buuuuut, they’re were sorta crap or god forbid, cost money, so i ended up just making a list on text edit. Then i heard about Taskpaper by Hog Bay Software.

It’s looks like a simple version of text edit, with a column on the left where you ‘tick off’ items you’ve listed. That’s it! Simple. But good simple.

I think i may just use Taskpaper instead of Text Edit from now on. Especially when copying text from a source for use in a html document, etc - as it doesn’t use Rich Text Formatting which seems to be the annoying default of Text Edit. There is of course the great BBedit for all those basic html things, but hey, whatever opens quicker is what i’ll use!

I think i’ve found a new friend.

Black is back!

New iMacMy first impression of the new iMac’s was “What the hell? Why on earth did they do that to the great design of the iMacs?!?”. The black rim around the screen looked dated and reminded me of the black plastic keyboards the PowerBooks once sported. Yucky yoo yar.

And then the back was all black?!?! What the hell? I understand racial equality is essential, but isn’t this taking it a bit far?

All bad jokes aside.. I think I’m becoming used to it already.. Just like the big fat chin on the white iMacs before. (That horrible chin.)

I thought it was funny and disturbing that apparently some people they showed the new iMac’s to before the release thought they looked more appealing… Could this be because they look like more familiar pieces of Dell crap or something?

My iTunes, bitch!

My iTunesSo this is pretty cool - a little web doodad you stick on ya webpage that keeps people up to date with either the music you’ve purchased from the iTunes store, your favourite iTunes music, or what stuff on the iTunes store you’ve reviewed…

So i’ve stuck one on my About page, and i reckon they look pretty cool! You’ve got a choice of designs, and i’ve gone with one that best matches my jeans.

I also tried out the RSS reader option you can stick on ya site that actually shows everything that you’ve download via iTunes - that includes all podcasts - everything.

In fact i didn’t want look too closely what was on the list - might divulge the time i download that Sex Tips podcast that was hanging around #1 position (no pun intended) on the Aussie iTunes podcast charts for a while (now at #11 - the wheelbarrow). Speaking of which, you’ve gotta go check out ep. 9, where she demonstrates some sexual positions to spice up things in the bedroom. But with a difference. A girlfriend of hers helps her do the demonstrating - it’s a classic - and vaguely arousing at the same time. If only…

Anyways, so back to Mac’s. (Nothin’ like an image of Steve jobs balding head in ones mind to bring one back ‘down’ to the earth. Ha ha. Get it? I hope you do, or else that was an awkward moment between us just now.)

Welcome!

flop ya mac outEven though this will be the second blog entry on my this new site, i’d still like to say welcome everyone, welcome to the new blog. I’m actually breaking in my blogging virginity, so if you like to watch…

As i said in entry #1, i spend so much time trawling the net to soak up new and exciting Apple stuff, that apart from talking to my mate Jase about Apple products (and boring my girlfriend with it - though she has developed quite a tolerance for my passion/obsession!) i thought i’d put some of that pent up energy into a site where i can talk outloud to myself. And perhaps even others!

One thing that i won’t be looking to do is create a breading ground for those angry angry people who just always end up insulting each other and having stupid arguments. Leave ya ego at the door ladies. We’re here for some fun lovin’, …fun.

So don’t forget to take your shoes off (floor’s heated), pants are optional, and kickback and touch your keyboard.

Who knows! This thing just might catch on.

iLife ‘08 - Install, Crash, Impress! (Updated)

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

iLife ‘08So in my Apple-loving excitement, I bought the new iLife ‘08 suite the day it became available to me in Australia.

Installed with no probs, but then I tried opening the new and cool looking iMovie (I’d watched the keynote presentation - so I was a pro operator already) and it opened… And then a spinny thing went spin spin, annnnnnnnnd then CRASH.

Cool. Very cool. And it wouldn’t (and still won’t) open at all. Maybe I’ll try restarting my computer and all that crap, but that was a bit of a doozy!

At least iPhoto worked flawlessly. I must say, with the new ’skimming’ feature and ‘Events’ management of the photo’s, they have made a worthy update (so far, so good). Check it out ’skimming’ of ‘Events’ in action here.

I opened iWeb - templates look really cool - but that’s as far as I went. Back to working on this wordpress installation!

And welcome! To the new mac website/blog/one-day-to-be-a-podcast.

And just so we get off on the right foot, I love you.

Update

Hoorah! The update to iMovie ‘08 fixed my crashing woes. But damn! When you import new footage into the new iMovie, you have to wait for what to me is too long, for the program to prepare the ability to ’skim’ the thumbnail of the footage. Sorta takes half the magic out of the whole process.

“Here! Let me turn your water and flour into a wonderful loaf of bread! Just gimme an hour or two.”

If Jesus had pulled a stunt like that when providing fishes and shit for the people (”Has anyone got a fishing rod?? Anyone!?”) he would have been eaten instead! Apple has a little way to go before i consider bowing to the east every half hour in honor of their products…
